Compared with 2017, the production situation of Guangdong's architectural ceramics has changed dramatically in 2020, with the number of companies, production lines, and employees experiencing the most dramatic shrinkage in the past 20 years.
First of all, production capacity has shrunk significantly. In the past three years, Qingyuan, Zhaoqing, Jiangmen, and Foshan, the four cities with the largest production capacity in Guangdong, have been affected by policies such as raising environmental protection standards and "coal-to-gas" policies, and many production lines have withdrawn. The number of building ceramics production enterprises in the province decreased by 37, the number of production lines decreased by 221, and the daily ceramic tile production capacity decreased by 2.3162 million square meters (equivalent to the annual evaporation production capacity of 718 million square meters. At the same time, glazed tiles have become the largest category in Guangdong. Although the number of production lines has decreased by 20, due to the transformation and upgrading of the production lines, production capacity has increased by 283,600 square meters. In addition, Guangdong's large/rock/thin plate line trend is in the ascendant, and it is far ahead of the country in terms of innovation and production capacity. In addition, there are 126,489 employees in the province's ceramic production enterprises, a decrease of 31,515 compared with 2017; of which 102,906 are front-line producers, a decrease of 29,674 compared with 2017. If OEMs, supporting suppliers, trade service providers, etc. are also included, the number of employees in Guangdong's architectural ceramics industry will have decreased by more than 31,515 in the past three years. From 2017 to 2020, the scale of Foshan's architectural ceramics production continued to shrink in the three years, and a total of 7 ceramics companies withdrew completely due to poor management or urban planning. Many ceramic companies have also eliminated some outdated production lines during upgrading and transformation. A total of 67 production lines have been withdrawn. At the same time, some new production lines for environmentally friendly products such as permeable bricks have been added in Foshan, and some formerly closed companies and production lines have been revitalized. Therefore, Foshan currently has 39 ceramic construction companies and 195 production lines, including 189 ceramic tile production lines, with a daily production capacity of 2.1615 million square meters.

Most ceramic enterprises in Zhaoqing were built before 2007, and their production lines are old and their production capacity is backward. Under Zhaoqing’s policy of encouraging and guiding ceramic enterprises to exit independently with backward production capacity through financial support, many enterprises’ backward production lines have been dismantled. In addition to the ceramic enterprises that have closed down and ceased production for more than 2 years due to poor business management or industrial structure adjustment in the past three years, the number of production lines in Zhaoqing has decreased by 53 (some enterprises have retained their indicators, and production lines that have not yet been completed due to planning and reconstruction are not included in the statistics).
In addition to shutting down old production lines, Zhaoqing City has seen an upsurge in demolishing old production lines and building new ones since 2019, resulting in a major adjustment in product structure.
As of the end of 2020, Zhaoqing City accounts for 40 of the nearly 100 large/rock slab production lines across the country. Qingyuan City currently has 29 ceramic companies, mainly located in Yunlong Ceramics Industry Base, Heyun Town, Qingcheng District, and Building Materials Ceramics Industrial City, Yuantan Town, Qingcheng District. The industrial distribution is relatively concentrated. As of 2020, Qingyuan City has built a total of 150 ceramic production lines (149 for ceramic tiles and 1 for tiles), with a total daily production capacity of 1.982 million square meters. After elimination and replacement in the past few years, about 6 ceramic companies in Qingyuan City have withdrawn from 2017-2020.
Most of the ceramic companies that have withdrawn from Qingyuan are related to the sharp rise in costs caused by the "coal-to-gas" transition.Ceramic factories exited due to poor management due to low added value of their products and rising freight and fuel costs.
The "Ceramic Industry Long March" investigation team learned during the visit that as of now, 29 ceramic companies in Qingyuan City have completed natural gas transformation, and the gas stations have been basically dismantled. Taking Qingyuan Heyun as an example, because it uses a single LNG gas supply, the gas price in the Heyun area has always been the highest in Guangdong.
In November 2020, the gas price in Qingyuan Heyun District reached a maximum of 3.18 yuan/m³. From the completion of the transformation to December 2020, there were successive outages due to excessive air pressure in the gas supply pipelines, construction damage and dug pipelines, etc. gas, affecting the normal production of ceramic enterprises. In addition, there are also some ceramic companies using LNG pipeline gas in Yuantan, Qingyuan, and the gas price rose to 3.5 yuan/m³ in December 2020.
In Qingyuan, low value-added products such as polished tiles and porcelain tiles have been gradually replaced by large/rock slabs, medium slabs, marble tiles, permeable tiles, inkjet polished tiles, etc. Some ceramic companies have even decided to dismantle production lines for porcelain tiles and polished tiles and completely adjust their product structure.
The "Ceramic Industry Long March" survey data shows that in 2017, Qingyuan City had only 1 large slab production line. As of October 2020, Qingyuan has built 18 large slab/rock slab production lines, with a total daily production capacity of 168,000 square meters. . The "Long March of the Ceramics Industry" field visit survey statistics show that Yunfu City currently has 18 ceramic companies and 57 ceramic tile (tile) production lines. The total daily production capacity of ceramic tiles is 1.033 million square meters; the total daily production capacity of Siwa is 960,000 pieces. In 2017, Yunfu City had 23 ceramic construction companies and 72 production lines. In the past three years, a total of 5 ceramic companies and 15 production lines in Yunfu have withdrawn.
In 2020, Yunfu's product types are mainly "glazed tiles, polished tiles, antique tiles, porcelain tiles, medium plates, wear-resistant bricks, exterior wall tiles, large slabs and western tiles", mainly producing differentiated Antique tiles and glazed tiles. According to statistical data analysis, the top three ceramic tile types in Yunfu City's total daily production capacity in 2020 are "glazed tiles, polished tiles, and antique tiles", and the combined production capacity of these three categories accounts for as high as 74%.

It is worth noting that the 2017 "Ceramic Industry Long March" investigation team also included the production capacity of ceramic factories that had previously ceased production/shutdown, including Taishan Haitang Ceramics Co., Ltd., Enping Huasheng Ceramics Co., Ltd., Enping City Zhengde Ceramics Co., Ltd., etc. Therefore, there are not 11 new ceramic factories that have suspended production/shutdown/collapse from 2017 to 2020.
Due to factors such as lack of industrial chain supporting facilities, poor management and weak market competitiveness, most of the ceramic factories previously built along National Highway 325 or scattered in villages have ceased production or even withdrawn from the stage of history.
Currently, only a few closed and discontinued ceramic factories in Shahu Puqiao New Building Materials Industrial Park have been revitalized, and most of them are ignored. Taking Enping Zhengde Ceramics Co., Ltd. as an example, it was established in 2015 It was closed for rectification, but it did not receive much attention during the period. It has become a "ruin" in 2020.
At the same time, the product categories produced by Jiangmen Ceramics Factory have also undergone considerable changes. Judging from the survey data in 2017, the main products of Jiangmen Ceramics Factory are polished tiles and glazed tiles. In 2020, the local polished tile production line has been significantly reduced. Glazed tiles are still the main product, but slate and full-body marble have also appeared. Ceramic tiles, negative ion fully polished glazed tiles, porcelain polished tiles and other upgraded products.
“Coal-to-gas conversion” is also a topic that cannot be avoided in the Jiangmen ceramic production area. According to relevant documents, the deadline for the "coal-to-gas" conversion of the Enping City Ceramics Factory is before the end of September 2020, and the "Shahu Puqiao New Building Materials Industrial Park" has been ventilated in late September. On October 2, the relevant departments of Enping City conducted inspections and law enforcement at Shahu Ceramics Park. On that day, two ceramics factories in the industrial park that had not completed the "coal-to-gas" conversion were required to suspend production for rectification.
However, due to excessive gas demand and insufficient gasification capacity of existing pipelines, a "gas shortage" occurred in the Shahu Puqiao New Building Materials Industrial Park in mid-to-late October. As of December, the local "insufficient gas supply" problem has not been effectively alleviated.

Heyuan, as a source of high-quality ceramic raw materials with high whiteness, has attracted a number of well-known ceramic companies such as Eagle Brand and Xinzhongyuan to establish production bases here. According to survey data from the "Ceramic Industry Long March", there were 4 companies in the Heyuan area in 2017Ceramics factory, 15 production lines. In 2020, there are only 3 ceramic factories and 7 production lines left in Heyuan City, and the number of production lines has been cut in half.
It is worth noting that the new Jucheng Ceramics in Heyuan has a production base covering an area of 2,112 acres and has introduced advanced European Industry 4.0 production equipment such as Sacmi, LB, System, AirPower and Carobia. , from factory design to strict process requirements, the production base will be built into a domestic Sacmi Industry 4.0 smart factory, with 22 new production lines planned in the future.
It is revealed that the production base is also equipped with a natural gas station and a solar photovoltaic power generation system, and has established a professional sewage treatment center, aiming to create a green manufacturing demonstration factory that leads the times.
In addition, there are one or two ceramic factories in Shaoguan, Zhanjiang, Yangjiang, Dongguan, Zhuhai, Guangzhou, Huizhou and other cities. Compared with 2017, Dongguan, Zhuhai, Yangjiang and other places have been supported by "big companies", and the changes in the past three years have been small. Zhanjiang and Huizhou each have one ceramic factory withdrawing, and the only ceramic factory in Maoming has been shut down. The structure is relatively stable and changes little.
